About

I am currently one of the first five ever International Post-Doctoral Fellows to which the Azrieli Foundation grants a Fellowship to do research in Israel.

For the next year or two, I will be working at the Geological Survey of Israel, trying to decipher the potential of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) as a proxy for characterizing underwater tsunami and/or storm/coastal deposits.  It should be an exciting mixture of scuba diving, Mediterranean waters, beach & sun, lab & office work throughout Israel's Upper Continental Shelf!
I will be also collaborating with researchers from the School of Marine Sciences of the University of Haifa... and other Israeli institutions hopefully!

Previous Universities:

Universidad EAFIT, Medellín, Ant., Colombia - B.Sc. Honours Geology, 1993 (M.Sc. comparative level in Europe)
Research: first ever Sedimentological and Geomorphological study of El Choncho Spit-Barrier Island, San Juan River Delta, Pacific Coast of Colombia.
Supervisor: Dr. Iván D. Correa.

University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada - M.Sc. Geology - Palaeoseismology, 2002.
Research: Paleoseismic Investigations on the Central West Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada: characterization, identification and dating of multiple palaeo-tsunami deposits found in Kakawis Lake.
Supervisors: Dr. Peter T. Bobrowsky and Dr. Eileen Van der Flier-Keller; Co-supervision of Dr. John J. Clague.

I obtained my Ph.D. in Geology from McMaster University late 2007 after an extensive, fruitful and adventurous research program on the barrier islands perched along the Apalachicola coastline, on the NW Gulf of Mexico shores of Florida, U.S.A.  The goal: understanding and corroborating the supra-tidal evolutionary history of 5 barrier islands, using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) as the geochronometric tool.

Ph.D. Dissertation Title: The Late Quaternary Evolution of the Apalachicola Barrier Island Complex, NE Gulf of Mexico, as determined from Optical Dating.
Supervisor: Dr. W. Jack Rink.

I continue to do research in this area of the Panhandle, extending my research to adjacent islands yet to be dated and analyzed.

I was (until Dec 2010) the Senior Scientist and Head Laboratory Technician of the AGE Laboratory (School of Geography & Earth Sciences at McMaster U.) in charge of training new technical staff and students (undergraduate and graduate) and in charge of dating all the commercial samples the laboratory is now undertaking.

Other research has included: Understanding the sedimentological evolution (infilling) of estuaries in Southern Chile; OSL Dating lake sediments in Ontario, Canada; Dating several terraces and high Andean Plateaus in the Central Cordillera of Colombia (looking at Landscape Evolution Chronologies using OSL); OSL Dating Paleolithic occupational sites in the Algarve Region of Portugal (in collaboration with the Université du Québec à Montréal); OSL Dating offshore underwater tsunami deposits along the coast of Caesarea Maritima, Israel; Looking for ancient tsunami deposits in coastal lakes along the W coast of Vancouver Island, Canada; Understanding the geology behind the evolution of the San Juan River Delta on the Pacific Coast of Colombia.
